Secure IT for Business

The limitations of MFA and the opportunities of passwordless authentication

Protecting accounts and access with only a username/password combination is extremely risky. If an attacker gains access to the data, they can immediately take over the account. Multi-factor authentication (MFA) significantly increases the level of security. It protects access with an additional code that is valid only once, or with biometrics.

However, cybercriminals have found ways to defeat multi-factor authentication (MFA) protection. In most cases, this involves phishing and social engineering. Companies should view MFA as just one component, although important, of an integrated, zero-trust security strategy. Passwordless authentication is a promising alternative to traditional password-based access methods. After all, passwords that do not exist cannot be stolen or guessed. Phishing and social engineering attacks also fail.

This white paper explains how attackers can undermine multi-factor authentication and how companies can protect themselves. It introduces passwordless authentication methods such as Passkey and shows how passwordless authentication can be successfully integrated into an organization’s IT security architecture based on zero-trust principles. It also discusses the importance of regular training, pen testing, and vulnerability analysis.
